This talk presents a case for transforming data into objects that encourage new forms of cognitive, emotional and cultural engagement with data and information. While scientific visualization research has greatly enhanced our ability to communicate data, a humanities-inspired approach offers a valuable opportunity to engage with complex data outside of traditional formats, such as static 2-dimensional graphics. Examples span interactive digital tools governed by physics-based algorithms to physical sculptures that rely on scale and tactile engagement to convey information. The ability to interface with data objects can also offer integrative insights that may otherwise go unnoticed in more complex, multidimensional data.
