A (topological) groupoid is a mathematical object that jointly generalizes topological spaces and groups. From a topological groupoid, we can build the full or reduced C*-algebra of the groupoid. Special cases of groupoid C*-algebras include commutative C*-algebras, group C*-algebras, and graph C*-algebras, which we can now view under one ``umbrella''. In these two lectures, we will introduce groupoids and get comfortable with groupoid terminology and examples, as well as develop the reduced groupoid C*-algebra. With any remaining time, we will discuss some more advanced topics.
