Abstract: I will give a brief introduction to C*-dynamical systems and their equilibrium states and discuss several examples, ranging from basic constructions on finite matrices and Toeplitz algebras to systems arising from number theory. Some of these systems exhibit unexpected connections with long-standing open problems such as Hilbert’s 12th problem on explicit class-field theory and Furstenberg’s x2 x3 conjecture.
