Movie special effects increasingly use scientific computing for solid and fluid mechanics simulation of virtual materials. Modern effects require increasingly physically realistic dynamics for materials like water, smoke, fire, and brittle and elastic objects. The demands are on the visual nature of the solution and are different than those traditionally encountered in applied mathematics and engineering. My talk will address new simulation techniques needed in these fields and some recent results including: extreme deformation of elastic objects with contact, high resolution incompressible flow, clothing and hair dynamics. Also included is discussion of a new algorithm used for simulating the dynamics of snow in Disney’s animated feature film, ``Frozen”.
