Automatic retinal image processing: the VAMPIRE project

Emanuele Trucco
University of Dundee

This talk will present the VAMPIRE project (Vessel Assessment and Measurement Platform for Images of the REtina), an international collaboration driven by the Scottish Universities of Dundee and Edinburgh, with partners in Europe, Asia and the USA (e.g., UCLA Jules Stein). The main VAMPIRE software suite aims to generate morphometric measurements of the retinal vasculature in fundus images. VAMPIRE software has been and is being used in studies on retinal vascular biomarkers for, among others, stroke, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, and cognitive performance. A second VAMPIRE strand addresses lesion detection and quantification, for instance in ultra-wide-field-of-view data from OPTOS scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (www.optos.com), both false-colour single frames (OPTOmaps) and fluorescein angiogram sequences. Further work is directed towards the sytematic validation of retinal image analysis software. The talk will conclude with a sketch of the envisaged trajectory and opportunities for VAMPIRE vis-Ă -vis UK and European health challenges.
