DEFECTS IN CRYSTALS: DISLOCATIONS, INTERFACES AND GRAIN BOUNDARIES (Part 1)

Peter Voorhees

In an effort to provide a common language for the program, the crystallography and properties of both dislocations and grain boundaries will be developed. Dislocations in face-centered cubic and body-centered cubic materials will be discussed. Elementary grain boundary crystallography will be introduced, and the five macroscopic degrees of freedom in grain boundary properties will be discussed. Following this, models for the dynamics of these defects will be presented with particular attention to grain boundary motion and the coupling between dislocations, deformation, and grain boundary velocity. A survey of various mesoscopic models of grain growth will be given. These models will also be used to illustrate the concepts mentioned above.
