We consider grain growth in polycrystalline materials, review experimental and theoretical results and try to explain the discrepancy between them. Using large scale simulations of a phase-field-crystal model allows to consider all relevant atomistic effects and to observe phenomena, such as grain rotation, grain boundary pinning and grain mosaicity, which typically are not considered within classical mesoscale models. The influence of these phenomena on scaling laws and size distribution functions will be discussed
