Director Search

DIRECTOR, Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics
UCLA's Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) is seeking its next Director, to begin the position in July 2008.
Candidates with imagination, energy and experience are encouraged to apply. It is necessary that IPAM’s Director possess
sufficient scientific distinction to be offered a tenured faculty position at UCLA. Duties of the Director include:
- Actively search out and develop innovative program ideas and modalities, and build contacts with organizers;
- Work with organizers to see that good program ideas are well-executed;
- Actively participate in IPAM’s scientific programs and monitor their quality;
- Actively seek out institutions to partner with;
- Engage in efforts to promote dialogues with members of the scientific and engineering communities;
- Actively seek out ways to maximize involvement of women and minorities in IPAM’s programs;
- Seek out funding opportunities that synergize with IPAM’s mission;
- Work in partnership with IPAM’s Board of Trustees and Science Advisory Board, with the National Science Foundation, and with the UCLA Administration;
- Play a central role in recruiting IPAM’s Associate Director and Director of Special Projects;
- Oversee the hiring of IPAM’s Assistant Director, Business Manager and Systems Manager, and work actively to build and maintain a first-rate staff;
- Prepare a budget to present to the Board of Trustees and oversee the prudent management of IPAM’s funds;
- Plan for IPAM’s long-term growth and development.
IPAM is centrally located on the UCLA campus and occupies its own building, designed by Frank Gehry. The UCLA Mathematics
Department is highly ranked in both pure and applied mathematics, is known for its innovative educational programs, and has
been among the top institutions in the world in sending invited speakers to the International Congress of Mathematicians.
UCLA ranks second in research grant funding among all US universities. The Southern California region is highly dynamic and
is home to 3-4 of the top 20 departments in virtually every scientific subject.
