Scientific Overview

We will offer tutorials in the first week of the program, to provide an introduction to the relevant problems as well as to the relevant concepts from mathematics, physics, atmospheric sciences, computer science, and other disciplines, and their applications.

The goal is to familiarize participants with the issues and techniques involved in Model and Data Hierarchies for Simulating and Understand Climate and to create a common language among researchers coming from different fields. The tutorial will be organized such that they cover the themes of the 4 workshops, which are

  • Equation Hierarchies for Climate Modeling
  • Numerical Hierarchies for Climate Modeling
  • Simulation Hierarchies for Climate Modeling
  • Data Hierarchies for Climate Modeling

Registration for tutorials is free, to encourage broad participation.

Application/Registration

An application/registration form is available at:

https://www.ipam.ucla.edu/elements/choose.aspx?pc=cltut

The application part is for people requesting financial support to attend the workshop. If you don't intend to do this, you may simply register. We urge you to apply as early as possible. Applications received by January 11, 2010 will receive fullest consideration. Letters of reference may be sent to the address or email address below. Successful applicants will be notified as soon as funding decisions are made.

We have funding especially to support the attendance of recent PhD's, graduate students, and researchers in the early stages of their career; however, mathematicians and scientists at all levels who are interested in this area are encouraged to apply for funding. Encouraging the careers of women and minority mathematicians and scientists is an important component of IPAM's mission and we welcome their applications.
