Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) 2009

Referee Instructions: RIPS 2009

Students: please give these instructions to the two individuals (most likely professors) who have agreed to each write a letter of recommendation to support your application to RIPS.

Instructions for RIPS 2009 Referees

One of your students has applied to participate in Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS), sponsored by the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics. RIPS is an unusual “REU” in that its research projects are sponsored by companies and national labs who seek solutions to industrial problems. Students work on teams of four under the guidance of a faculty mentor and an industry mentor. To read more about RIPS, go to www.ipam.ucla.edu/programs/rips2009.

Your student has asked you to write a letter of recommendation on his or her behalf. The letter should include your impressions of the applicant’s skills and potential in his or her field of study. If you have any insight into the student’s ability to work on a team and/or assume a leadership position, please include it as well. Please be sure to refer to the student by his or her legal name rather than an “American” name or nickname, to help us match the letter to the correct student. (You may want to ask the student under what name he or she applied.)

The deadline for applications is Sunday, February 15, and we need your letter within a few days of this date. You may submit the letter by mail, or you may use the RIPS “upload page” to upload a PDF of your signed letter to IPAM. To help us track the receipt of letter, please name the file with the student’s last name, then first name, then “letter” and your last name, each word separated by a space. Go to http://rips.ipam.ucla.edu/secure/upload.aspx and follow the instructions posted there. You will receive an automatic email confirming receipt of your uploaded letter.

Our address for the mailing of letters is:

Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics
Attn: RIPS2009
460 Portola Plaza Building, Suite 1158
Box 957121
Los Angeles, CA 90095-7121

Thank you. Please email rips2009@ipam.ucla.edu if you have any questions.
